IXPs: Strengthening Internet Speed, Resilience and Affordability

The Internet Society has once again highlighted the critical role of Internet Exchange Points (IXPs), emphasizing their importance in strengthening local Internet infrastructure and improving connectivity worldwide. Through collaboration with local communities, the organization continues to support the expansion of IXPs as a means of enhancing Internet performance, resilience and accessibility.

In Armenia, the country’s Internet Exchange Point is ArmIX. The exchange point was launched in 2011 by the ArmIX Foundation, which was established on April 2, 2010, by the Internet Society NGO and the Union of Advanced Technology Enterprises (UATE). Over the years, cooperation between the Internet Society NGO and ArmIX has contributed significantly to the development and growth of the exchange point. This year, ArmIX is undergoing a major technical upgrade and expansion, including the deployment of a new point of presence in Gyumri.

Internet Exchange Points are a fundamental component of modern Internet infrastructure. They enable the direct exchange of traffic between networks, allowing Internet service providers (ISPs), content providers and other network operators to connect and exchange local traffic efficiently through a neutral platform.

By keeping local Internet traffic within national or regional infrastructure, IXPs eliminate the need to route data through distant international networks and data centers. This significantly reduces latency, lowers the cost of international connectivity and improves the overall quality and reliability of Internet services.
