Safer Internet Day: A Global Initiative Bringing Together Over 180 Countries

Safer Internet Day (SID) is one of the key dates on the global digital calendar. It is observed annually on the second Tuesday of February. This year, Safer Internet Day will be marked on February 10 under the theme “Together for a Better Internet.”

The initiative was launched in Europe in 2004 as a regional program, with funding from the European Union. Its primary objective was to highlight the importance of personal responsibility in creating a safer online environment, with a particular focus on minors – children, adolescents and young people.

In 2009, just five years after its launch, Safer Internet Day expanded beyond Europe and achieved global reach, uniting 65 countries in a single year. Over the past 15 years, the number of participating countries has tripled.

As of Safer Internet Day 2026, the initiative brings together more than 180 countries across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. Today SID is coordinated by the European Commission in collaboration with the Insafe and INHOPE networks and national Safer Internet Day committees established in participating countries.

“This day serves as a reminder that the internet can be not only a source of information and opportunity, but also a safe and trusted environment – provided it is used consciously and responsibly. In this context, our organization regularly brings together experts through various events aimed at addressing challenges related to digital literacy,” said Igor Mkrtumyan, Board Chair of the Internet Society NGO.

Over its 22-year history, this globally inclusive initiative has remained committed to fostering a safer digital environment by organizing trainings, discussions, public awareness campaigns and other educational activities.
