The development and modernization of Armenia’s community libraries continue through a range of programs initiated by the Internet Society Armenia Chapter PO.
As part of its efforts to transform libraries into Internet access centers and make them more accessible and attractive to visitors, the program provides libraries with computer equipment, Wi-Fi connectivity and Internet access. Alongside these technical upgrades, library staff receive training to effectively use new digital tools and library collection management systems in their day-to-day work.
The Internet access centers emerging through the modernization of regional libraries have the potential to become an important part of community digital life, bringing education, technology and community services together in one accessible space.
To date, the Internet Society Armenia Chapter’s programs have engaged approximately 65 libraries across six areas of Armenia: Ararat, Armavir, Kotayk, Lori and Syunik provinces, as well as Yerevan.
The need for such initiatives is also underscored by changes in Armenia’s library system. While 648 public libraries were operating across the country in 2018, that number had declined to 480 by 2024. At the same time, particularly in regional communities, libraries can serve as important local spaces where people can access not only books and other printed materials, but also the Internet and digital services, while acquiring new knowledge and skills.
Currently, modernization work is underway in 24 libraries across Syunik Province. As part of the initiative, several libraries in the region have gained Internet access for the first time.
