IT Training Course Held in Jermuk as Part of Girls in ICT Campaign

The opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence AI, along with cybersecurity principles, were covered in a training course held in Jermuk on April 26, as part of the ITU’s “Girls in ICT” international campaign.

The training titled “Girls in ICT: For Inclusive Digital Transformation” was organized by “Internet Society Armenia Chapter” PO in collaboration with “Internet Society” NGO.
“This marks the eighth year our organization has participated in the international Girls in ICT campaign. By bringing the event to Jermuk this year we aimed to make it accessible to women and girls in the region, demonstrating that ICT sector is open to everyone,” said Vesmira Harutyunyan, Board Chair of the Internet Society Armenia Chapter PO.

More than 20 women from various professional backgrounds, representing the cities of Yeghegnadzor, Vayk, and Jermuk in the Vayots Dzor region, participated in the event.

“We are working to create opportunities for various age and social groups to develop digital education, media literacy and of course the skills to apply AI in everyday life while mitigating associated risks,” said Kristina Hakobyan, Vice Chair of the Board of the Internet Society NGO.

Globally, women’s participation in the ICT sector is below 20%, while in Armenia, this figure is around 40%. According to representatives of sectoral organizations, although this is considered a relatively high result, there is still much work to be done to expand opportunities for women and girls.

The international “Girls in ICT” campaign was launched by the International Telecommunication Union ITU with the goal of increasing the involvement of women and girls in ICT sector. Over the past 11 years, more than 11,590 events have been held in 175 countries, engaging over 417,000 women. In Armenia, approximately 360 women from various age groups and professional backgrounds have participated in events held as part of the campaign over the past 8 years.
