Internet Governance Course: A New Opportunity for International Engagement

Would you like to gain a deeper understanding of how the global Internet is governed, who shapes its rules and standards, and what role you can play in these global processes?

The Internet Governance course offers an opportunity to gain fundamental and practical knowledge about the Internet governance ecosystem, its key stakeholders, technical infrastructure, and regulatory processes.

Participants will explore four key areas:

  1. The Internet Governance Ecosystem
  • History and development of Internet governance
  • Key functions of Internet governance
  • The multistakeholder Internet governance model
  • The role of international institutions, organizations, and stakeholders
  • Key principles that have shaped Internet governance
  1. Internet Standards, Names, and Numbers
  • Key organizations and processes involved in developing Internet standards
  • The RFC system and core Internet standards
  • IP addresses, domain names, and DNS
  • The system for managing domain names and Internet resources
  • Key actors involved in DNS and Internet addressing management
  1. Cybersecurity Governance
  • Key cybersecurity risks
  • The multistakeholder cybersecurity ecosystem
  • The role of CERTs, CSIRTs, and Certificate Authorities
  • The importance of Internet Exchange Points (IXPs)
  • BGP, Autonomous Systems, and Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs)
  • How interconnected networks work and how the global Internet operates
  1. Regulatory Aspects of Internet Governance
  • Key sources of Internet law
  • The role of private intermediaries in shaping Internet policy
  • Personal data protection and privacy
  • Intellectual property and intermediary liability
  • Cybercrime, access, telecommunications regulation, and freedom of expression
  • The impact of emerging technologies on Internet governance policies

Who can participate and how to join?

The course is open to students, educators, CSO members and anyone interested in the field. No prior professional knowledge is required. However, proficiency in English is required, as the course will be conducted in English.

The course is free of charge, but registration is required.

To register, participants need to create an account on the Internet Society (ISOC) learning platform using their first name, last name, and email address through the following link .

All registered participants will be invited to an online orientation session covering technical aspects of accessing and using the learning platform.

The Internet Governance course starts on September 21 and will run for four weeks, with one online session per week.

What will participants gain?

By the end of the course, participants will have developed a structured understanding of Internet governance and will receive a certificate of completion.

The course can be an important step for those who wish to become more actively involved in international Internet governance processes, professional networks, and global conferences and initiatives, including the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), ICANN, and other international Internet governance platforms.
