Global Encryption Day was celebrated in Yerevan for the third time. This year, the Internet Society Armenia Chapter PO organized a thematic event titled “Encryption: The Key to a Secure Internet” with the support of the Internet Society Foundation.
At the event, leading IT professionals presented the importance of encryption not only in the context of national security and data protection but also as a matter of personal responsibility for individual users. According to them, encryption is not just a technological tool but also a guarantee of the fundamental human right to privacy.
The audience was introduced to the main types of encryption, with detailed discussions on its practical applications in messaging platforms, VPN services, and other online communication tools.
During a special panel titled “Privacy and Security in Balance: Can Encryption Be Regulated by Law?”, speakers emphasized that while some countries attempt to limit encryption under the pretext of ensuring public safety, such measures could seriously endanger personal freedoms and the business environment.
“In 2023, by becoming one of the first to join the Global Encryption Coalition’s initiative, we committed to organizing annual events in various formats. We strongly believe that these initiatives contribute to safer internet access, enhance the country’s level of cybersecurity, and support the training of a new generation of professionals,” said Igor Mkrtumyan, President of the Internet Society Armenia Chapter PO.
The event brought together around 50 students from vocational and higher educational institutions with technical focus, as well as early-career professionals. For them, this gathering served as an important opportunity to learn about encryption – a key tool in digital security. It protects communications from third-party interference, secures personal data, and builds trust in digital services.
