Jermuk: The Next Stop in the “Transformation of Regional Libraries” Project

Jermuk Community Library, which serves 967 readers annually, will soon be equipped with an additional computer featuring a digital management system and a bibliographic database of over 40,000 book titles.

This is a gift to the library from the Internet Society Armenia Chapter PO, provided within the framework of the “Transformation of Regional Libraries into Internet Centers” project, implemented with the support of the Internet Society Foundation (ISF).

“The technical re-equipment of regional libraries and the modernization of their management systems is a strategic priority – one that this program actively supports. At the same time, we remain mindful of the value of printed books and hope that the collection of Armenian and world classics donated today will meet the interests of our readers,” said Vesmira Harutyunyan, Board Chair of the
Internet Society Armenia Chapter PO.

According to librarian Hasmik Sahakyan, the oldest readers of the Jermuk Community Library are over 85 years old and have just as many current needs as those under 18, who make up 75% of the library’s users.

“We also serve residents of Kechut and Gndevaz, and even Jermuk residents who study or work in Yerevan continue to use our library. The technical and management software upgrades, along with the addition of new books, will help improve service quality and attract more readers. In fact, we hope to increase the number of registered readers to 1,000 this year,” Sahakyan noted.

Jermuk Library, which has been operating for 71 years, was merged with three other libraries in 2011 and has since functioned as a community institution. Vahan Misakyan, a partner of the Internet Society Armenia Chapter PO, will provide technical support for the implementation of the library’s digital management system.
