Launch of Online Training Program for Librarians

On January 19, the first session of a series of online digital training courses for librarians was held, bringing together staff from four libraries in Armenia’s Syunik Province. The training is implemented by the Internet Society Armenia Chapter as part of the “Digital Development of Libraries: Internet Access Centers in Communities” program, which targets 15 libraries across the region.

The program officially launched with an opening event in Goris on October 11, 2025. Its primary objective is to transform libraries into modern digital hubs that respond to the needs of diverse population groups by expanding access to information and digital services within local communities.

To date, four libraries in Syunik Province have received technical equipment. The computers supplied to the libraries are equipped with up-to-date open-source software, including OpenBiblio, LibreOffice, and GIMP, enabling efficient digital library management and the delivery of a wide range of digital services.

“In our view, this program is a way to restore libraries to their central public role as spaces for trusted information, learning and community engagement. Access to digital tools is only the first step; our goal is for libraries to become places where visitors can access modern digital services and develop digital skills, regardless of where they live,” said Igor Mkrtumyan, President of the Internet Society Armenia Chapter PO.

According to Tigran Zargaryan, Coordinator of the “Digital Development of Libraries: Internet Access Centers in Communities” program, the success of the initiative largely depends on the readiness of library staff and their ability to effectively use new digital tools.

“This phase of digital training is important not only for introducing new software, but also for fostering a shift in mindset. Librarians are increasingly becoming mediators in the digital environment, and their level of preparedness will determine how effectively libraries contribute to community development and meet educational needs,” Zargaryan emphasized.
