Armenia demonstrates a notably high level of women’s participation in the information technology sector, outperforming the global average as well as several EU member states and the United States.
According to UNESCO, women account for approximately 33% of the global workforce in science and technology, while their share in the IT sector ranges between 26% and 30%. However, data from the World Economic Forum (WEF) indicate that women remain significantly underrepresented in leadership roles within technology companies, holding only 10–15% of executive positions worldwide. In the field of artificial intelligence (AI), women make up just 30% of professionals involved in development and research.
Figures from the National Center for Women & Information Technology further highlight this disparity: in the United States, women occupy only 26% of technology-related roles, while in Germany – one of the EU’s leading technology hubs – women represent approximately 16% of the technological workforce.
Within this global context, Armenia stands out as a relatively positive case. According to the 2024 Armenia Technology Market Report developed by local analytical platforms, along with data from Enterprise Armenia, women comprise 23,480 of the country’s IT workforce – around 40% – a figure well above the global average.
Among women employed in Armenia’s IT sector:
- 27% work in technical roles,
- 63% are employed in non-technical positions,
- 18.8% hold founder or senior executive roles in leading technology companies, compared to a global average of 12.4%.
Despite this progress, women remain underrepresented in top leadership positions both in Armenia and globally. Experts emphasize that closing this gap requires targeted educational initiatives and inclusive human resources policies. Numerous studies indicate that teams with greater gender diversity are up to 35% more likely to outperform their peers in product development and innovation.
